girlpuppy - 'I Just Do!'

Atlanta-based girlpuppy (the cutesy moniker of Becca Harvey) returns today with her latest indie track “I Just Do!”. Where “Windows” takes a step back to contemplate the loss of past romantic entanglements (all the while paying homage to the floaty atmosphere of Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs”), “I Just Do!” focusses on transformation and growth after tackling emotional unavailability.

Steeped in futile romanticism the early 00’s tinged cut boasts lush soundscapes and idyllic vocals that see Harvey at her most raw and honest. Heavier in instrumentation than the folk-teetering “Windows”, “I Just Do!” marries a Phoebe Bridgers-esque incredible vocal performance with the lyrical creativity of Olivia Rodrigo to produce a cut that emphasises Harvey’s place in the industry.

Speaking on the track she confesses, “...It’s just about that feeling of knowing you’re wasting your time by developing feelings for someone who is completely emotionally unavailable, but you do it anyway because it feels good.”

Taking inspiration from the late and great David Lynch, the accompanying visuals, directed by Trent Wayne, take the Olivia Rodrigo approach of bringing crepuscular creatures into the alt-pop world. Harvey, playing a vampire, falls for her would-be-slayer, creating a bittersweet tension that aptly reflects the narrative of the track being portrayed.

Released in conjunction with the announcement of her upcoming sophomore record, “Sweetness” (due out late March), “I Just Do!” joins the ranks with the sugary-sweet “Windows” and drilling “Champ” as the latest teaser for her newest project. With “I Just Do!” girlpuppy demonstrates her uncanny ability to create wistful soundscapes that evoke emotion and have an enduring impact.
