Artist Of The Week #295 - Polly Money

This week's Artist of the Week is indie-pop artist Polly Money - who has just released her highly anticipated EP 'T-Shirt Nothing Else'.

Fans of the likes of The Japanese House, Dijon and Clairo will find solace in Polly’s closely personal lyrics paired with genre-bending, electronic-leaning production flourishes. With T-Shirt Nothing Else, Polly Money navigates the complexities of love, longing, and self-discovery, fully stepping into her own and establishing herself as a standout queer artist in the indie-pop landscape at large.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.

Hey there Polly Money, how are you? So your EP is out now– how does it feel to have it out there?
I’m doing pretty good thanks! Everything always feels more complete once you’ve released the final project of a campaign. Singles are super fun and the build up is really exciting but there’s nothing like being able to listen to an EP or an Album in the order it was intended. So it feels great finally having it out. It’s definitely a flag in the sand for my next phase of music.

It is called ’T-shirt Nothing Else’ – what is the meaning behind that?
It’s the first line of track 4 and I liked how it sounded and looked written down. If you’re only wearing a T shirt with someone then It’s usually quite intimate and revealing. I like the idea that someone get’s the permission to see you like that.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
These songs were written over the past few years and in that time I’ve been on tour quite a bit. So the recording process has been quite all over the place but in a fun way. Some of the parts were recorded in different hotel rooms around the world and then also in my mates studios. I only realised when rerecording some of the vocals that the original takes were really soft, as I was recording them in hotels. I was sort of self conscious that people would hear me so I was singing everything really soft and quiet which has actually really influenced the vocal delivery on this EP.

What are the key influences behind the EP?
Around the time I was writing the songs The Japanese House had released her latest album ‘In the End it Always Does’ and the warmth in that production has been a big influence on this EP. I've sort of moved more into the indie world for a sec. We referenced Fleetwood Mac quite a bit for production as well, especially on the more acoustic tracks like ‘i'm not proud’.

If the EP could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
I feel like it would be some kind of teen hazy film like ‘Dazed & Confused’. To me this is a summer EP so it would be cool if it soundtrack a bit of a ‘no responsibility summer’ type film.

Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
‘She don’t like the planes, that fly over our bed. I’ve got to get her somewhere she can fly again.’ I like the sentiment of doing something for someone that make them the happiest they can be.

Now the EP is out there – what next for you?
I would love the next thing I do to be an album so I’m going to be working on that which is extremely exciting as I’ve never done it before. I can’t wait to get completely immersed in that process. I’m also planning to be playing a bunch of solo shows with my band so expect to see us out and about soon.
