Honeyglaze - 'Female Lead'
‘Female Lead’ is the theatrical new alt pop song recently released by South London-based trio Honeyglaze. The single comes with its own Casablanca-inspired short film that portrays another side to the inspiration behind the song.
It is a short and to the point, inspiring and passionate alternative pop song with soft vocals telling a story about feeling overwhelmed. A vintage feel makes the single stand out from others within its genre, the almost spoken and frilless vocals make it sound pure and personal. I hadn’t listened much to Honeyglaze before but am captivated by their simple and explicit sound, with ‘Female Lead’ being a perfect introduction to the haiku-loving trio that only formed before the first lockdown.
Honeyglaze mix the personal with romanticised ideals and bring those in a heart-wrenching yet humorous way, the greatest asset of their songwriting being presenting what’s written in-between the lines in moments of well-versed clarity. About their latest, singer Anouska says: “I was overwhelmed by the state of the world during the first lockdown and constantly being surrounded by bad news. It was a time when people were playing with changing their appearance and I felt incapable of writing anything of any actual importance so I decided to write about something as completely arbitrary as dyeing my hair.” And the beauty of music is that all of us get to give the music we listen to its own meaning, so dyeing your hair could stand for trying to fit in or becoming someone else for the sake of your sanity…
However, no matter what ‘Female Lead’ means to you as a person, its sound is timeless, its video a well-produced short film and its soundscape uplifting and light-hearted, being a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day and inspiring me to dye my hair.
