Divorce - 'Hangman'
Ahead of their debut album release, Nottingham-based quartet Divorce showcase their storytelling skills with their latest single, ‘Hangman’.
With the track being a highlight in their recent live performances, fans are catching on quickly as the band continues to weave their signature sound into intricate narratives.
‘Hangman’ delves into themes of judgment and societal scrutiny. Divorce have previously explored the human experience and the complexities of life through their music, and this new single fits right in.
The track begins with the raw, twangy edge of a guitar. It blends the alternative sides of country and grunge seamlessly into a smooth riff that carries throughout the song. The haunting melody gradually builds into a powerful crescendo, filled with a wonderfully healthy dose of distorted electric guitar and Omnichord. The instrumentation is both gritty and polished, showcasing the band's growth and their commitment to pushing boundaries within both their own music and the industry.
The harmonies from Tiger Cohen-Towell and Felix Mackenzie-Barrow add depth and emotion to the track. The lyrics are thought-provoking, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences with judgment and self-worth.
Speaking on the writing process of the song, Felix Mackenzie-Barrow says "The job I was doing necessitated a high level of emotional control, which was not something I had experienced before and so writing about the work and allowing my subconscious to flow freely helped me to gain some perspective. I listened to it on the way back to work the following morning over and over and I felt like I'd done a good one… The world of social care is hidden in a society that likes to pretend it doesn't exist, but it is vital and deserves much more focus and investment than it currently receives."
In live settings, ‘Hangman’ has been met with enthusiastic responses. During their performance at London's Islington Assembly Hall, the band delivered a captivating rendition of the song, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. This further solidifies the idea that Divorce’s debut album ‘Drive To Goldenhammer’ is one to look forward to.
The single encapsulates the band’s unique sound and their ability to tackle complex themes with authenticity. As they continue to evolve as a group, the track serves as a promising indicator of what's to come.
‘Hangman’ is a song that not only showcases Divorce’s musical talents but also their ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. Their UK & EU tour begins March 27th, 2025, and with dates already selling out, it’s shaping up to be their most anticipated run yet!
