Inspired #412 - Violet Greens

Alt-jazz singer Violet Greens have returned with new her new single ‘Fallin’ - which features US rapper Slim Guerrilla.

Taking inspiration from Billie Holiday’s heartfelt singing - Violet creates a crossover between Jazz, contemporary pop music and lyricism, completely owning her own distinctive sound. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Asking artists for their top 3 inspirations is like asking a mother her favourite child; Unless you’re mother Courage, that’s a very difficult thing to do. But if I had to choose I’d go with Billie Holiday for she’s accompanied me through my entire life and is considered a pioneer in the jazz field. She has written several songs- which during that time was not very common for female artists - and, through her music and performances, openly addressed issues such as racism and inequality.
Another artist that I find very inspiring is Tupac, because he was an exceptional lyricist, shedding light on social and political issues with a courageous honesty.
Bill Evans touched me deeply with his genius ability to express emotion so elegantly and genuinely through a piano. He also is recognized as a trailblazer and visionary in the realm of jazz.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I’m a huge fan of the movie “Stalker” by Tarkovsky, because it explores existential questions and invites viewers to reflect on the nature of reality and the complexities of human desires. Besides, I absolutely love its mesmerising and atmospheric visuals.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Although I’ve never had the chance to visit New York, I find it very inspiring due to its rich and storied jazz heritage. It’s a city that has played a pivotal role in the shaping and evolution of the genre.
I’d love to stand on the same sidewalk outside a club where Billie Holiday's heels once touched the ground.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I consider myself very lucky to have been raised in an artistic and musical household and both my parents are a constant source of inspiration to me. They not only have nurtured my musical development by introducing me to various artists and musical genres, fine arts and ballet, but also empowered me to pursue my dreams.  Although, as immigrants, they’ve been facing numerous obstacles and difficulties, and being aware of the challenges in the music industry, they’ve never pushed me into anything. I highly appreciate that.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
When I was writing Fallin’ I was consumed by my own repetitive and debilitating thoughts, leading to detachment and seclusion.
"Fallin'" feat. Slim Guerilla, narrates the story of a conflicted and troubled misfit who’s overwhelmed by a rapid-paced and two-faced society and find themselves lost within the (figurative) labyrinth of life's challenges.

How would you like to inspire people?
I firmly believe that music and art should bestow a moment of peace upon us. Living in such a rapid-paced society is challenging and leaves almost no room for thought and self-reflection. In my opinion listening to music or looking at painting or any piece of art compels us into pause, reminding us of our humanness. I hope that when people listen to my music they can engage with a moment of tranquillity and introspection.
