Inspired #375 - Ocean Tisdall

Ireland breakout alt-popstar Ocean Tisdall has just released his new single ‘Crying Room’.

The track sees the artist in a more colourful yet sombre guise. Coupled with an incredibly absorbing skins-esque video that really brings the song to life, he looks to reflect the troubles and anxieties of today’s youth through warm lyrics and humourous visuals. Preview the video, that will be released in tandem with the single and which Ocean created with his musical and visual collaborator Seven.

Speaking about the new single, Ocean said, "'Crying Room' to me is the epitome of growing up in gen z. Sometimes we allow our emotions to control the outcome of our reality and it’s so hard not letting that ruin core memories in our life. I wanted to write about the feeling of being “that guy” at a party. Depressed & consumed by tears, we often drown others that may be dealing with their own issues but wanting an escape into our own mess, so having a “Crying room” to go to at these places would have been perfect.”

He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
I always find this question so hard because so many different artists inspire me literally everyday but if I had to try to narrow it down it would probably be Conan Gray, Billie Eilish and Troye Sivan just because they are so honest and authentic when it comes down to there writing and how they express themselves. They create stories with their songwriting and visuals which is something that I love to do.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
A Film that inspired me would be The Perks of Being a Wallflower I remember the first time I watched it I cried my eyes out .The film really showed me to not let my past define me or hold me back and to make peace with what I can’t change. It also showed me that genuine good friends and living in the moment is so important in life.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I’m not really a city person I’m more of a little country town rustic vibez type of guy, haha. In big cities I feel like it’s really hard to clear your head and understand your thoughts and there’s just too many distractions. But if there is a city out that will inspire me I have a gut feeling that it’s in Italy somewhere. I’ve been there three times and I’m just obsessed. It just brings a sense of calm over me. I love their way of life and would really like to move there eventually.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Most inspiring person to me has to be my mother. I know it’s cliché to say but she really is amazing in my eyes. I can barely look after myself, never mind raising three kids & working a full-time job. She never told us what to be and she never told us that our dreams were delusional, she just let us discover ourselves and that’s something I hope every kid can have the opportunity to do.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
When writing ‘Crying Room’ I got my inspiration from quite an emotional place. It was genuinely how I felt growing up and going to parties. We really wanted to get that story across in lyrics & video more than anything.

How would you like to inspire people?
You know, as an artist I feel like people are constantly asking you how do you want to inspire people? and what do you want to say? But the artist’s that inspired me the most were the ones that didn’t think about what they needed to say or think about how they needed to inspire – they inspired me just by being themselves in a world where to fully be yourself is already protest enough. So by me expressing myself how I want and by speaking how I want and by loving who I want maybe that will in turn inspire people.
