Morgan Harper- Jones - ‘Main Character’
Tackling the challenges of regretting moments from our past, Morgan Harper-Jones' ‘Main Character’ reassures its listeners that everyone around us also have had these moments and makes the experience less isolating.
August 31st sees Morgan Harper-Jones set to release her latest single ’Main Character.’ Morgan’s newest release follows her recent release of the track ’For Forever Now,’ which followed up her 2022 EP ‘While You Lay Sound Asleep.’
Morgan describes ‘Main Character’ as “an anxiety-spiral-slideshow featuring all of my biggest regrets safely decanted into a 3 minute 30 second song.” The feeling of having your deepest regrets on a constant loop in your mind, is perhaps one we're all very familiar with - along with the way our brains seem to want to fixate on those moments. In a lifetime where it seems impossible to not at least have one thing you regret; the track makes the experience seem somewhat less alienating.
The track feels as though it's longing for the past to be different, that perhaps some of these moments Morgan’s reflecting on weren't as bad as she felt like they were at the time. 'Main Character’ appears to capture the experience of growing up and experiencing the moments it has in store for us exceptionally well, the latest single would not feel out of place if it featured on a coming-of-age movie soundtrack.
Morgan also explained that “there was a period of time where I was obsessed with self-correcting. I think lockdown gave me too much time to think and I was convinced I was an asshole.” The fear that people are going to perceive us in such a way is one that we've all most likely struggled with at some point, but lockdown had a significant impact on peoples’ mental health while isolating, and it was a time in which our own brains became our worst enemies.
This year looks to be a big one for Morgan Harper-Jones, with her forthcoming album as well as October seeing her playing three live shows in Leeds, Manchester and London. ‘Main Character’ definitely packs a punch, and whatever follows in its wake is just as likely to be as wonderful as the latest track is.
