Michael B Thomas – 'August'

Leeds based singer songwriter Michael B Thomas released his debut single ‘August’, offering a succinct reflection on love and loss through this nostalgic and delicate tune. The imagery of “august butterflies” offers a wistful consideration of someone who is no longer a part of your life, and of the journey through adolescence to experience.
The title seems to reflect the passing of the month itself – thematically similar to “August” by Taylor Swift, the subdued yet appreciative tone of the song seems to accept the changes associated with the end of summer and relationships throughout them. The month suggests the conclusion of an era; a time that can often become isolated and dreamlike compared to the realities of the rest of the year. Thomas comments on the “feeling that she’s never gonna come back again,” implying the fleeting nature of a summer love, similar to the transient presence of a butterfly. He has also commented on the lyrics identifying both the fear and influential nature of the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Bam Bam records is set to release the full collection of songs later this year, which are to be similarly documenting this journey of existential self-discovery. Thomas’s use of not only his own perspective in his music but also that of others to convey a feeling is bound to allow one to delve even further into his analysis of society’s identification of life and love.
