The Elephant Trees - 'Ones And Zeros'
Ones And Zeros is the newest heartfelt synth-pop single from The Elephant Trees.
The track's backstory is undeniably heartbreaking but also painfully beautiful. Ones And Zeros was written as a homage to Martha's, the frontwoman of the band's grandfather, as he tragically lost his life to cancer during the pandemic. When talking about her grandfather, Martha divulged that "It struck me that my grandad was one of the only people I knew that learned everything first-hand. He'd been up the mountains; he'd grown his own food, he'd explored the world in the most analogue fashion".
This realisation led Martha to comprehend that despite people having the power of knowledge and technology at their fingertips, people know "everything about nothing" in the now Gen-Z generation. The single challenges this generation's collective intellect and mentality at a time where information is wholly available. This is a strikingly thought-provoking concept.
The Elephant Trees focus on this topic in the lyricism of the track; meanwhile, the soundtrack is almost hypnotic. Electric synth riffs and trance-like electric drums continue to build and explode into an energetic chorus. The beauty of the track lies in the execution of focusing on such an important topic and balancing the seriousness of the concept with magnificently addictive instrumentals. The track certainly graces the same air as Paramore. The track, very surprisingly, comes to an end with some glittering acoustic guitar which allows reflection for the listener.
Originally from Guiseley in Leeds and now residing in Manchester, the group consists of lead singer and Lyricist Martha, drummer Tom and guitarist Sam. The band is built on a foundation of true friendship and togetherness. With Martha starting her own DIY label 'Incantation Records' and The Elephant Tree's exciting new start in Manchester, there is a real reason to be genuinely excited about this band.
